Urbanisation, which is rapidly taking place in many developing countries, often translates into congestion today, and sorely challenges the skills and ingenuity of city planners. The contributors to this issue of JOURNEYS have pitched in with ideas on transportation and land-use planning to alleviate the ills of urbanisation. These were first presented at the 2010 World Urban Transport Leaders Summit, organised by the LTA Academy, and centred around the theme "Transforming Urban Transport for Liveable and Sustainable Cities".

O.P. Agarwal, a Senior Urban Transport Specialist at the World Bank, B.I. Singal, the Director-General of the Institute of Urban Transport (IUT), India, and Jack Short, the Secretary General of the International Transport Forum (ITF), share their insights on urban transport planning and policies. Moshe Ben-Akiva from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, presents an ongoing joint research on the Future Urban Mobility, and Yoshitsugu Hayashi from Nagoya University, Japan, proposes rail transit-based solutions for mega-cities around the world.

To commemorate the 15th anniversary of Land Transport Authority (LTA), Singapore, Lew Yii Der and Ang Chor Ing trace the measures implemented over the years that have kept Singapore's land transport system relatively smooth and seamless.
